Sometimes my job makes me do things that are not nice to others, what is the best way to not lose myself in it

I am a Union Steward and frequently find myself representing employees against management. Our meetings often turn ugly with raised voices and obvious discontent on both sides. I feel I am just doing my job and I even have respect for some of the managers I have to discuss these issues with. However, I also feel that stresses and pressures associated with these negative confrontations with management are starting to affect my personality and interactions with others in general.

It really is impossible to separate yourself from work related stress if your job is truly stressful. I would think that being the buffer between two opposing points of view would begin to take its toll after a while.

The real question is “Is it worth it?”

Sometimes it is hard to remember that OUR JOB IS NOT OUR LIFE, IT IS WHAT WE DO, SO THAT WE CAN LIVE OUR LIFE. That said, it is really a matter of whether or not it is worth it to continue down the path you are taking or reevaluate what is really important to you.

Stress takes a major toll on our bodies, mind and spirit after a while. It seems, at times, that people get so wrapped up in their financial security - they forget to take care of their physical, mental and spiritual wellbeing.

I have worked in some very stressful situations over the years, and I had to learn that I would rather make a little less money and be happy, than make more and be miserable.

You spend a great deal of time working, and like it or not, most people do carry their work attitude home with them. I worked in Cardiology for many years, and the most valuable lesson I learned from my patients is……It doesn’t matter how much money and “stuff” you have at the end of the road…….when you live in the doctors office after you retire !!

You have to enjoy life along the way…Tomorrow is never guaranteed !!!
