How stressful would a career in global business management be on my marriage?

Bella D asked:

I realy want to persue my career in Global Business Management, but I am afraid that it might put a lot of stress on my marriage. My husband has asked me to look into other career choices because he is afraid of all of the time I would be gone traveling. I feel that his request is unfair. I was wondering if anybody has any valuable input on this subject.
I know that my marriage is the most important thing. I have never been one to choose my personal needs over my family. I just think that he should be a little more understanding of my career choice. We are only in or 20’s no kids and have been maried for seven years. I just want a career that will be benficial to our family as a whole. I chose this career for several reasons. The most important is because it is something that I enjoy doing.

I say instead of risking your marriage. Why don’t you guys open up your own business. That way you can still work in business managemant and you don’t potentially mess up your marriage.

It is a very competitive world out there. GBM means you do a lot of travelling in the USA and to the rest of the world, wherever your company’s business are and in looking for business. Some of the exciting places now are in China, India, Middle East countries and the new countries from the defunct USSR. Even, if you are in your USA office, you may be working at the wee hours of the morning just to be able to communicate with some people in other parts of the world. Yes, this will take a toll on your marriage. You have to weigh the pros and cons of this exciting career with your husband. One word of caution though: Dont prioritize your career over your family. It is not worth it.
