How does one tell a manager thank you but not thank yout to a promotion? ?

Chunky Monkey asked:

I recently started with this company last year. I have been there about 5 months. I originally was in a middle management position. Due to a messed up infrastructure, no processes in place, no policy or procedures this place was one mucked up office to put it nicely. I was under so much stress and no matter what I did.. there was always negative comments, complaints and issues with the long term standing staff members who were my subordinates.

After 3 months of nothing but a vile sick work environment my administrator sat me down and told me the office was in no better spot than before I started, in fact I am no better than the person I replaced! I thought about it and presented an answer to the issues. I opted to step down to a “feild position” and honestly?? It was the best thing I have EVER done for myself. I have had 2 months of nothing but happiness and loving the less responsibility and I only answer to myself instead of a bunch of on the verge retiring nurses.

My administrator came to me last week and told me she needed to apologize as she had taken on my job since I abandoned post. She told me she HAD NO IDEA how much work I was really doing.. and that she really understood where I was coming from.

Now the rumor is she is going to ask me to join the mangement staff again.. and I already have the answer.. AHH No.. thank you.

But how can I relay this without being disrespectful??

That is perfectly acceptable. When asked you would just explain that you are perfectly happy in your job responsibilities right now and would not feel comfortable taking on anything extra.

However have you thought about this? You will not have the same responsibilities as before b/c there is another person helping now. Also if you turn down a management responsibility once it is ok but if you turn it down a second time, this might end your career at this company. If you show no interest in moving up, don’t expect the offers to keep coming. Some people are perfectly happy doing this job for the rest of their lives but if you eventually want to move up, you need to take the promotions when it is offered.
