Hi my name is Jennifer I am 19 and my husband and I are having are first child. Everything is going great the baby is healthy but I am worried about labor. My mom has tried to calm my nerves but alot has changed since she had me. My mom had a rough labor and im am her only child because of it. I am afraid of whats going to happen to my baby, I keep thinking that my fear of needles is going to somehow make me stress the baby out. I have done some blood work and have gotten over it a little but everybody keeps telling me there will be alot of needles and pain during labor. I will do whatever it takes to keep the baby healthy and stress free. I would like to know whats the best type of pain mangement that you would recommend?? Thanx

i was the same way with my first. just relax. your going to do just fine. when you are in labor, you will be in such pain that you wont be able to feel the needle. after the epidural starts working you’ll do great. just listen to what the doctor says to you/

yes they put an IV in when you go in to have your baby. I **** needles too but it is not as bad as you think…. If you feel that the pain is more then you can handle get the epidural….. but you will be in such great hands when you have your baby there is really nothing to worry about. All the nurses are well educated and can help you out more then you know. Also you can ask your OBGYN dr and see what options you have on pain management… he can tell you and whatever you decide (if other then epidural) he will be sure to document it in your file. That way when you need something they will know. It is scary but just keep in mind that the nurses do this on a daily basis…. When you do have the baby they will take it to the warming table, clean it off, do the foot prints….. then they will eaither do a sponge bath in the room(what they did with my 2nd) or take the baby to the nursery and do it (what was done with my first). I promise everything will be fine.

Bill Cosby once described labor pain.
He said “Take your bottom lip and pull it over your head”.

I have needle phobia too, and I really thought it would bother me when I was in labor, but it didn’t. I had an epidural and it was wonderful! By the time I got it, the contractions were getting stronger and I didn’t care about the needle. The relief I felt was almost immediate! Your baby should handle the stress just fine, your body does its best to protect the child! Good luck…know at the end you will get the best reward of all…a new little baby!

i seriously do NOT want to scare the jeevies out you, but it hurts so bad. you will have strength you never realized you had. you will be capable of bending the side rails on a hospital bed from pulling yourself up and pushing at the same time. you will be yelling and not give a darn who hears you. if your lip was on a crane and lifted it over your head and fit like a hat, you would be in alot of pain. that is what it will feel like but (of course) in a different area. imagine pooping out a volley ball. thats what it’ll feel like maybe worse. but in the end, its well worth it and you wont mind when you see the baby. wish you luck my dear… congrats, and happy b-day to the little one when it gets here!

Let me just say that it is not has bad as you think it will be. Like you, I **** needles. The only needles that you should have maybe the IV, take blood when you first come in and then 1 if you have an epidural. I just remind myself that this is all for the baby.
I have had very good luck with epidurals. I have had two and no real pain with my babies. I was alert and felt pressure so I knew when to push. Everyone is different, but I do think epidurals are wonderful.
Having a baby is nothing like you see on TV with all the screaming and yelling. (at least that has been my experience)

It depends on your level of pain tolerance. How do you normally handle menstrual cramps? Do you take over the counter medicine, prescriptions, or just use relaxation and breathing techniques? Now labor will be much more than this, but maybe it will give you an idea of your pain tolerance. I found that the Bradley Method, or just finding some good relaxation techniques are great for labor! Most people will say drugs, drugs, drugs! If that’s okay with you, then do that, but if you rather things go naturally then research some good books and internet articles. My favorite book is “Natural Childbirth the Bradley Way” by Susan McCutcheon. Another good book is “Hypnobirthing: The Mongan Method” by Marie Mongan. These books will really help you to realize what you body will go through and how to handle the things that happen during labor. Hope it helps! Good luck!

My doctor said that it is his job to make me as comfortable as possible during labor which to me, means whatever pain medication that I need. I already know that I want an epidural. Don’t be ashamed to use pain medication, it doesn’t make you weak or the birth any less special.

With my first i was so scared too, but it was so easy i don’t take those epidermal or whatever you call it i go all natural because i am so afraid of needles anyway when you are in labor just remember to relax yourself and breath my pains was pretty much in my back and if you relax it will go easier if you stress out and tense yourself it will be harder for you so good luck and i hope i helped

okay let me say this the iv is nothing so don’t stress over that, by the time you are ready to go into labor you are ready to have this baby and not worried about how much pain you will be in because you will be so tired of being preg that you won’t care. I don’t recommend iv drugs like stadol or nubain because those drugs make you drowsy and help to sleep between contractions, but doesn’t take the pain away so it’s a waste, i hated those drugs, I opted for an epidural because you are still awake and alert but don’t have any pain and can enjoy your experience, and for everyone i know it seemed to relax them more so their cervix dilated quicker and their labor was quicker. even though they say that epidural can make labor take longer, i don’t agree. I wasn’t going to have anything, but i got really sick like vomiting during labor with my son and so i opted for epidural and i had the best experience after that. good luck..also go to a lamaze class they will teach you how to breath and focus during labor.

Fear will make it hurt more. You have to be calm and relaxed.
Read Gentle Birth Choices. Find a homebirth midwife in your area and have an introductory meeting to talk about the safety of a birth at home. No needles. Much less stress. Anyone who bothers to look at the studies and statistics will learn that a healthy mom with a healthy baby will have a BETTER outcome at home than in a U.S. hospital.
If you don’t use a midwife, then hire a doula for your hospital birth. Your doula has sat with hundreds of women through their labors. She will know what is normal and can encourage you throughtout the process and also keep the nurse staff from causing you undue stress from unnecessary procedures that they routinely do on everyone regardless of risk. A doula will cost $300 - $500 but it is well worth it. There’s no charge to at least talk to a doula to find out what services they will provide for you, because it’s more than just at the birth.
Read the book, talk to a midwife, or talk to a doula.

There is only a few needles in Labor. Once you get the epidural you won’t feel a thing. Don’t worry the epidural doesn’t hurt as long as you hold completely still. If you move it can cause you to have major back pains later. Also if you do start to feel pain they have a button that administers more medicine to your epidural. You’ll do fine and afterwords you’ll realize you made a big fuss for nothing.

Congrats on your new baby! My mom had 3 long labors and I have had 2 short and fast labors. So, just because your mom’s labor was rough, it does not mean your’s will be also. My mom and older sister had Braxton Hick contractions and I had none with either of my pregnancies. When you arrive at the hospital they will put an IV in your arm to keep you hydrated. Also, they will put a band around your belly to monitor your baby and contractions. I had an epidural with my 2nd baby and that is the route I definetly plan to go with this baby if I can’t take the pain anymore. You’ll be fine. Good luck!
