Harrassment and Stress in the workplace? What are my options?
September 20th, 2009 | by Anthony |Phil in Fallon asked:
I’ve been working for a very large government contractor on a military installation for almost four years now. I work in an office environment with many conflicting personalities. The problem with this is that when problems arise, there really is nowhere to go. Nepotism runs very deep in this company. I would say that about 20% of the 300 employees are related in some way. And most importantly, almost all of the upper dozen management are related! Although we are all in the Teamster’s Union, the union will not give it there all because I’ve been told, “Don’t rock the boat” as well as, “You know how things work around here, with this family”. So, there’s my problem. I work in a very hostile environment and I think my number is coming up. I get written up for any little BS thing. They go through my paperwork and files looking for dirt anytime I may call in sick or take a personal day. The last time I was being written up, I did not sign the paperwork because the union guy sitting in with us called BS, and finally spoke up and said, this is obviously a witchhunt. The boss threw out the paperwork and told me to leave. I got out of this last one, but now she is smokin’ mad! And I know she’s out for revenge. Anyway, I am really stressed out when I go to work, I work in a hostile environment where I am always looking over my shoulder. I have nowhere to run to because all of the management are brothers, sisters, spouses, cousins, it’s ridiculous! I am going leave this job because I can’t work in these conditions, but at the same time I feel like they got the best of me and that “they” won by running out yet another good employee!!

What is more important here..their getting the best of you or your mental and physical health?? Get out of this situation and find a job where you will be happy and healthy. Life is too short. Good luck.

just work there and act like nothing ever happened if they say something to you tell them they don’t do this to the other employees and don’t leave till you get fired be as annoying to them as a deep wedgie

I will start by saying I am not a sexist, but your biggest problem is a female boss. A woman was not created to handle the stress and responsibility of being in charge of 300+ people and there are very few women that are good at it. My advice to you is to do the best job that you are able, follow the rules, be punctual, take responsibility for your actions, and if they fire you then you have a case of “wrongful termination” Also, have a plan “B” ready, i.e. another job idea. Also, make sure that you have a copy of ANY document, form, or any other written notice that you are served.

Have you documented the harassment and all the things they’ve done to you. You should have. I agree, you’re going nowhere fast. Even if you quit they’ll probably give you bad references. I’d turn over the documentation to the people they work for(military) or the EEOC. They may not
get it in the rear but it’ll sure make’em squirm while the investigation is going on.

If you really feel like this, you need to take it to the top. You should have a General at your military installation. Just put a bug in his ear. Don’t be afraid to use the Post Commander’s open door policy. I am sure things will change VERY quickly. Believe it or not, I am about to use my Post Commander’s open door policy very soon. I am in the military. But this is something that needs to be taken to the highest I can go. Good luck. And remember, this is YOUR career. Don’t let anyone take that away from you.
